Ferrol Cruise Port’s New Terminal to Open in Spring 2027

The Port Authority and Global Ports Holding presented their joint project at Seatrade Cruise Med in Las Palmas, aimed at boosting passenger traffic and strengthening Ferrol’s position as a tourism destination

Ferrol Cruise Port expects to have its new passenger terminal operational by spring next year. The announcement was made during a joint presentation by the Port Authority and Global Ports Holding at Seatrade Cruise Med 2026, one of the cruise industry’s leading events. The President of the Port Authority, José Antonio Álvarez Vidal, and GPH Regional Director, West Med, Francesc Grau, described the commitment to Ferrol by the world’s largest cruise port operator as a “very important milestone.” The presentation took place at the Puertos del Estado stand before representatives of various port authorities and cruise industry professionals.

The President of the Ferrol-San Cibrao Port Authority, José Antonio Álvarez Vidal, highlighted the importance of working with a company such as Global Ports Holding and stated that “this is a strategic alliance and truly a strong commitment to both the port and the city.” After highlighting the technical characteristics of the port’s berths and the tourism attractions of a region that continues to surprise visitors, Álvarez Vidal said he was proud to present the new cruise terminal – Ferrol Cruise Port – which will undoubtedly bring a significant transformation to the port and provide a boost to passenger traffic.

The President of the Port Authority also stressed the importance the new infrastructure will have for Ferrol and “the opportunity presented by Ferrol Cruise Port to take another step forward in the transformation of the port and integrate it into the port-city relationship project.” In particular, he highlighted the transformation currently underway through the Abrir Ferrol al Mar project, which “among other things, will make it possible for the Arsenal, a true historic treasure, to be seen without its wall and opened up to all citizens.”

Before concluding, the President of the Port Authority once again emphasized the importance of the alliance with Global Ports Holding, “which truly represents excellence in this sector.” He therefore underlined the improvement the new terminal will bring, “which we expect to have ready in spring,” adding that “from Ferrol’s currently modest position in cruise passenger traffic, this will represent a strategic step forward alongside a major partner.”

Strengthening Ferrol as a Destination

On behalf of Global Ports Holding, GPH Regional Director, West Med, Francesc Grau stated during his remarks: 

"Ferrol represents an important addition to our West Mediterranean and Atlantic portfolio, strengthening our presence in Spain and expanding our reach across the region.

We look forward to supporting the new cruise terminal project as it continues to develop and to the opportunities it will create for both the port and the destination. Our aim is to support Ferrol’s long-term growth as a cruise destination while ensuring it benefits from the experience, standards and connectivity of GPH’s wider regional network."

The Ferrol-San Cibrao Port Authority awarded GPH a 30-year concession to build and operate the cruise terminal at the Port of Ferrol. The project will occupy a total area of 960 square metres at the outer quay and will be developed in two phases. In the first phase, a 480-square-metre terminal will be built, with construction expected to begin this year. Operations are expected to commence during the 2027 cruise season.

Ferrol thus joins GPH’s network of 35 ports worldwide, serving more than 22 million passengers, further strengthening the company’s presence in both Spain and the Atlantic region.
