The largest cruise terminal in Europe, operated by Global Ports Holding (GPH), the world’s largest Cruise port operator, and developed in partnership with local partner SEPCAN, has been inaugurated, marking a new milestone for Gran Canaria and further consolidating its position as a key destination in international cruise tourism.
The innovative terminal building offers 14,000 square meters distributed across two levels. It features three boarding bridges, delivered by Milan Port Equipment through GPH’s alliance with Talleres Milan, and has the operational capacity to accommodate up to four cruise ships simultaneously. Its layout ensures smooth and efficient operations for both transit calls and homeport ships, projecting a modern and welcoming image of the island.
The terminal is part of a 40 million euros investment plan, aimed at modernizing cruise terminals in Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. The project was constructed by Satocán following the latest sustainability and innovation standards, including the use of recycled and eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient systems, solar power solutions, and responsible waste management, making the terminal a reference model for sustainable port infrastructure in Europe.
Since taking over operations in 2022, cruise traffic across the three ports, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura, has grown from 1.4 million to over 2 million passengers by 2025. With the completion of the new terminals, the ports are well positioned to unlock the next phase of cruise growth.
Close collaboration with the Port Authority of Las Palmas has ensured the adaptation and improvement of surrounding areas, guaranteeing smooth, safe, and comfortable arrivals and departures for passengers.
The inauguration ceremony brought together local and regional authorities, security forces, business leaders, and members of the port community. The event was hosted as a mid-afternoon cocktail reception at the terminal, where guests enjoyed a refined atmosphere complemented by soft music.
During the ceremony, institutional representatives and project stakeholders highlighted the strategic importance of the terminal and its positive economic impact on the city, including increased cruise calls supporting local commerce, hospitality, catering, and service sectors.
Beatriz Calzada, President of the Por Authority of Las Palmas:
“The official inauguration of this terminal represents much more than the launch of a new infrastructure. It confirms that the Port of Las Palmas is ready to continue growing, offering top-quality services and responding to the trust that major international cruise lines place each year in our port and in the Canary Islands as a destination”
Francesc Grau, Regional Director West Med, Global Ports Holding:
“The opening of the new cruise terminal marks an important milestone for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and further strengthens its position as a key cruise hub in the Atlantic. This project reflects the strong collaboration between the Port Authority of Las Palmas, our local partner SEPCAN, and Global Ports Holding in delivering a modern and sustainable facility that enhances the experience for cruise lines and their guests visiting the Canary Islands.”
Mehmet Kutman, Chairman, Global Ports Holding:
“We strongly believe in the long-term potential of the Canary Islands as one of the leading cruise destinations in the Atlantic. Las Palmas holds a strategic position within global cruise itineraries, and this new terminal represents an important step in further strengthening the destination’s role within the international cruise market. Through our collaboration with the Port Authority of Las Palmas and our local partner SEPCAN, we share a common vision to develop modern, future-ready cruise infrastructure that supports cruise line operations, enhances the passenger journey, and contributes to the sustainable growth of the destination. As the world’s largest cruise port operator, Global Ports Holding remains committed to investing in high-quality port infrastructure and creating long-term value for the destinations in which we operate.”
Looking ahead, the new terminal will host Seatrade Cruise Med this September, showcasing Las Palmas and the Canary Islands to the global cruise community and strengthening its role within the global cruise market.
With its modern design, comprehensive facilities, and strong sustainability focus, the terminal reinforces Gran Canaria’s position as a leading cruise destination, offering an efficient, organized, and high-quality experience for both passengers and the city.
